The County of Lambton is looking to partner with landowners to help strengthen our living snow fence program.
Living snow fences help keep wind-blown snow off County roads, reducing the need for plowing and salting. This reduction in salting benefits the environment by reducing salt concentrations in road runoff (melting snow). Reducing the impact of drifting snow saves money by reducing the need for plowing and salting - less plowing reduces fuel costs and helps minimize carbon emissions.
The use of standing corn rows (depending on crop rotation) is a simple, proven, and cost-effective method of reducing the effects of drifting snow on County roads. The County of Lambton has had a Living Snow Fence program in place since 2011.
Requirements
To register for the programs, landowners must:
- Own land along a County road (typically on the north and/or west side of the road)
- Leave a minimum of 12 rows of standing corn, 12-24 rows from the edge of the field adjacent to the County road to act as a snow storage area.
To register, please contact the Public Works Department at public.works@county-lambton.on.ca or call 519-845-0801.
Compensation
The landowner will be compensated by the County for the crop left standing and can harvest the remaining crop after the winter season has ended. The County of Lambton will compensate 1.5 times the market price on December 1st of the year.
Landowners must provide the average yield per bushel for the harvested portion of the field. The County will measure the area left and provide calculated compensation for the agreed upon area in April of the following year.
How to participate
Landowners interested in joining the Living Snow Fence program or learning more about program details can contact Lambton County Public Works at public.works@county-lambton.on.ca or 519-845-0801.
