Wyoming, ON - Lambton County Council will be considering a net increase of 2.5% to the County property tax levy when it meets to discuss the County's 2022 budget at the Council meeting scheduled for Wednesday, March 2, 2022.
The Draft 2022 County Budget was presented during a special joint meeting of Committee A.M. and Committee P.M. in Wyoming on Wednesday, February 16, 2022. The draft document calls for $85 million to be raised through local property taxes and total spending of $246.9 million, allocated as follows:
- General Government/Council activities - $14.5 million
- Office of the Chief Administrative Officer - $752,000
- Corporate Services Division - $8.1 million
- Cultural Services Division - $12.5 million
- Finance, Facilities and Court Services Division - $15.9 million
- Infrastructure & Development Services Division - $35.2 million
- Long-Term Care Division - $44.3 million
- Public Health Services Division - $33.5 million
- Social Services Division - $82.2 million
The proposed 2.5% tax increase is comprised of an operating budget increase of 1.9% and a capital budget increase of 0.6%. An assessment growth increase of 0.8% assisted in containing the proposed tax increase to 2.5%.
“This draft budget takes into account strategic investments for our community as we look to future needs and gradually transition away from impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Lambton County Warden Kevin Marriott. “These investments, especially in regards to affordable housing and long-term care, are crucial for Lambton County as demand for these services is already increasing, and is anticipated to continue increasing as we move forward.”
The Draft Budget calls for the allocation of $18.5 million to various reserves and reserve funds in 2022. The County uses these reserves to finance large, necessary projects that may arise in the future or to pay for unexpected opportunities and emergencies.
Cost pressures and revenue losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic are projected to continue in 2022. The majority of these cost pressures and revenue losses are expected to be mitigated through internal cost containment measures and available funding programs.
At its November 3, 2021 meeting, County Council agreed to suspend the County capital grant program for 2022. No new capital grant requests will be entertained in the 2022 Budget.
Budget deliberations are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., Wednesday, March 2, 2022 and if required, will continue at 9 a.m., Thursday, March 10. Deliberations will be streamed live and made available for archival viewing through the meeting calendar on the County's website at lambtononline.ca/meetings.
