Wyoming, ON – Lambton County Library is hosting accomplished actor and advocate Shayla Brown for a film screening of “Women Talking” followed by a live Q&A as part of its One Book Lambton program on Wednesday, April 3 from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. at Sarnia Library Theatre.
The novel “Women Talking” was written by Canadian author, Miriam Toews, and published in 2018 and is the selected title for the 2024 One Book Lambton program. The film, “Women Talking” was written and directed by Sarah Polley and premiered in 2022 and went on to win the prestigious 2023 Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Shayla Brown’s career spans roles in an acclaimed TV series, live theatre, and a feature film. Notably, she has acted alongside Jason Momoa in the Apple TV Plus sci-fi series "See" and made a memorable Toronto stage debut at the Crows Theatre in April 2022 with "Orphans for the Czar." In December 2022, Brown captivated audiences with her role in the film, "Women Talking". Shayla, who has been blind since birth, advocates for better representation of the visually impaired in the entertainment industry.
Both the book and the film “Women Talking”, are inspired by real-life events in an isolated Mennonite community in Bolivia, where the women of the isolated religious community grappled with reconciling a brutal reality with their faith. When the women discover who has been drugging and attacking them at night, they're given an ultimatum. Forgive them or leave.
“Women Talking” is rated PG-13 because of mature and sensitive themes and has a runtime of 1 hour and 44 minutes.
