Sarnia, ON - Lambton County's Student Nutrition Program volunteers, who provide healthy food to students every school day, were recognized today by the Ontario Student Nutrition Program-Lambton (OSNP-Lambton).
"The Student Nutrition Program is 100% volunteer driven," said Leslie Palimaka, Student Nutrition Coordinator. "Volunteers work tirelessly to ensure students are nourished and ready to learn. Their time is invaluable."
Daily volunteer activities include grocery shopping, food preparation and raising funds to support food costs.
Student Nutrition Program by the numbers:
- 42 schools
- 8,830 students every school day
- 1.5 million healthy snacks served (annually)
- 450 volunteers
- 11,000 hours of service
The event, at Marcanda Tea House and Zekveld's Garden Market, included the presentation of volunteer certificates and a tour through the apple blossoms.
Student nutrition programs receive base funding from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services and supported by the Ontario Student Nutrition Program, South West Region. Locally, Lambton Public Health and OSNP-Lambton coordinate the program. Additional funding is raised by individual schools and donations from local businesses.
