Art & Ideas – In Conversation with Rebecca Basciano

Sarnia, ON – The Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery invites art and history lovers to attend an enlightening Art & Ideas lecture on Thursday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m. 

This lecture will feature Ottawa Art Gallery curator Rebecca Basciano, who will explore the artistic career of under-represented artist Frances-Anne Johnston (1910-1987), one of Canada’s foremost painters of still life’s, flowers, and interiors.

Positioned as a feminist recovery project, this lecture is the result of extensive primary research, creating new space for the appreciation and validation of an artistic practice that was shaped by domestic realities, including motherhood. This lecture is held in conjunction with the exhibition “A Family Palette: Frances-Anne Johnston, Franz Johnston and Franklin Arbuckle”.

After the lecture, attendees will have the opportunity to explore Johnston’s work within the exhibition space and engage in question and answer periods directly with the curator.

Art & Ideas is a series of presentations that complement the current exhibits by drawing connections to their themes and by featuring discussions with specific artists and experts. The series is redesigned each season to entice creative thought and encourage new perspectives.

The gallery is open Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Thursday from 11:00 a.m. – 8:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
