Sarnia, ON – The Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming Art & Ideas lecture, In Conversation with Skawennati, will be taking place on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at 7:00 p.m.
Multidisciplinary artist Skawennati (Mohawk, Turtle clan) will join us virtually to discuss the inspirations behind her exhibition From Skyworld to Cyberspace.
Skawennati’s work examines Indigenous cultural history through avatars and virtual environments. Using Haudenosaunee philosophies such as the Sky Woman Story of Creation and the Ohén:ton Karihwatéhkwen (Thanksgiving Address), she approaches cyberspace as a metaphor for the future. The works in her exhibition From Skyworld to Cyberspace adopt the framework of Indigenous Futurism to perceive the future as being synonymous with possibility.
Registration is required and can be completed through the Art & Ideas page of the JNAAG website. Limited space is available for the live stream at the JNAAG.
Art & Ideas is a series of presentations that complement current exhibits by drawing connections to themes found in those exhibitions and by featuring discussions with specific artists and experts. The Art & Ideas series is designed each season to entice creative thought and encourage new perspectives.
From Skyworld to Cyberspace is on display at JNAAG until March 18, 2023. To learn more about the exhibition, visit jnaag.ca.
The Gallery is open Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. – 8:30 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
