Grand Bend, ON – Lambton Heritage Museum is approaching the completion of a $1.2 million renovation project in the Lambton Gallery. The project included a complete redesign of more than 7,800 square feet of existing exhibit space into a permanent exhibit area coupled with a multi-use flex space. The new exhibit will be available to the public beginning Saturday, June 3, 2023.
Museum staff are busy completing finishing touches including installing text panels and placing artifacts. The new exhibit makes use of multi-media technology such as touch screens and display monitors, as well as interactive features and hands-on experiences. New exhibit walls, display cases, LED lighting, audio capabilities, and video surveillance bring the display area up to date with modern museum standards.
The County of Lambton received a non-repayable contribution of $206,000 from the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) to support the renovation of the museum’s exhibit gallery to improve accessibility and energy efficiency.
“The extensive renovations and accessibility upgrades to the Lambton Heritage Museum will ensure more people can experience the exhibits and enjoy while learning,” said the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario. “The Government of Canada supports the Museum’s dedication to sharing the rich history of the Lambton region. Preserving artifacts and improving features will ensure that our shared history is celebrated and remembered for generations to come.”
The renovation also focused on improving the environmental controls to make the space more energy efficient and maintain important climate controls for the artifacts. The new permanent exhibit highlights the rich and multi-faceted history of Lambton County using artifacts from the Museum’s collection of over 25,000 objects.
“The Lambton Gallery redesign gave us the opportunity to make deeper connections between the Lambton of the past and the Lambton we know today. We were also able to update some accessibility features and introduce interactive components to let visitors experience history in a unique way,” says Dana Thorne, Curator/Supervisor of Lambton Heritage Museum. “We can’t wait for our visitors to see the new exhibit.”
To celebrate the completion of the new permanent exhibit, the Museum is welcoming the public to its Lambton Gallery Re-Opening Celebration on Saturday, June 10, 2023. The event will take place between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., with tours of the new space led by Dana Thorne at 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:30 p.m., and historical demonstrations throughout the day.
