Wyoming, ON - The Lambton County Long-Term Care Division has launched a new program called Lambton County Connects (LCC). LCC provides individuals in Lambton County an opportunity to socialize, learn new skills, and stay connected to others from the comfort of their own home, while helping prevent social isolation in the community. All activities are offered free over the telephone or online by video if participants have a tablet or computer with internet access.
The program was launched with the support of the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP), which is a federal grants and contributions program that supports projects that make a difference in the lives of seniors and their communities. Through the program, the Government of Canada encourages seniors to share their knowledge, skills, and experiences to the benefit of others. The program provides funding for projects that encourage seniors to play an important role in their communities by volunteering, leading, and participating in community activities. The nearly $25,000 received from the NHSP has been allocated to offer a variety of programming and activities to LCC participants.
Staff members are currently working with community agencies to educate all employees who interact with older adults about the program and spread the word to interested individuals. "We know security and fraud prevention are an important focus for many people right now," said Lee Ann Woollings, Community Services Supervisor with the Long-Term Care Division. "We are working hard to educate potential participants and their caregivers about the program to emphasize its security, explain the registration process, and promote its benefits."
Participants can register for Lambton County Connects by calling 519-882-1470 ext. 5007 or by visiting www.lambtoncares.ca. Once registered, participants will receive a program guide that outlines the available programs and includes a calendar listing the dates and times they are offered. Participants call ahead to reserve a spot in programs they are interested in, then on the date and time of the program they call in to join, or the program administrator can call them if requested.
These programs will particularly benefit those who are currently on waitlists for Adult Day Programs. "The Lambton County Connects program is a way for us to extend our services beyond our physical walls and reach more people than we would with traditional day programs," said Jane Joris, General Manager of the Long-Term Care Division.
A variety of programs will be offered, including special topics and activities lead by guest speakers. LCC is also a great opportunity for those in the community to volunteer. LCC is currently recruiting outgoing, creative, and caring individuals with strong communication, problem solving, and computer skills who want to make a difference in their community.
