Wyoming, ON – Lambton County Library is planning a free family party on Saturday, January 27 with a day full of activities including a concert, movie, face painting, retro gaming, a maker activity on the laser cutter and more as part of a Family Literacy Day Festival at Sarnia Library.
The festival runs from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and begins at Sarnia Library. Activities will also take place at the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery beginning at 12:00 p.m.
The main feature of the festival will be two free, live performances by Dan the Music Man, a Toronto-based songwriter and entertainer, who will perform two 30-minute shows at Sarnia Library Theatre, at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
“There is no shortage of activities before and after the musical performances,” said Vanitia Campbell, Public Services Coordinator – Youth Programs and Outreach. “Buzz and Honey from the Sarnia Sting will be visiting the library, the Oil Museum of Canada and the Lambton Heritage Museum will host paper lantern making and an artifact detective activity, and the Ska:na Family Learning Centre will visit the library with dream catcher crafts and songs and drumming.”
The Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery will feature family-friendly tours of the Family Palette exhibit, a scavenger hunt, and a Family Saturday Studio Drop-in session.
The festival agenda also features a Literacy Fair at Sarnia Library with activities and information tables hosted by community groups including Literacy Lambton, Lambton Learns, Lambton County Children's Services, Lambton Public Health, and Boys and Girls Club Sarnia-Lambton, among others. The activities will celebrate togetherness, discovery, and the joy of learning.
Registration is not required for any event, and all activities are offered at no cost.
“Family literacy focuses on the literacy skills of the entire family,” said Campbell, “When families engage in literacy-related activities together, the literacy skills of the entire family are strengthened, which encourages lifelong learning and sets kids up for success."
Family Literacy Day has been celebrated annually across Canada since 1999 and is dedicated to creating awareness of the significance of reading and participating in literacy-related activities as a family and community.
