The Woodlands Conservation By-Law aims to encourage woodland owners to maintain and harvest their woodlots in a sustainable manner through the application of good forestry practices.
Why do we need the Woodlands Conservation By-Law?
Woodlands clean the air, conserve soil and water, provide habitat for wildlife and produce timber and other products. Since woodlands grow slowly, careful management can help ensure their resources and benefits are available for future generations.
We use forest management techniques that maintain genetic, species and ecological diversity to uphold the long-term health of forests. Harvest, maintenance and renewal are carried out in a way that minimizes negative impacts to forest values like fish and wildlife habitat, soil and water quality and quantity and forest productivity.
Exemptions from the By-Law
The County of Lambton Woodlands Hearings Board hears applications for exemptions to the County's Woodlands Conservation By-Law.
After a public hearing to receive input from the applicant and neighbouring property owners, the Hearings Board makes a decision regarding the application. It is standard practice that the applicant is required to enter into an agreement with the County of Lambton to replant an area equal to that which is proposed to be removed.
The Woodlands Conservation Officer is generally in the office every Wednesday. Please call 519-845-0809 ext. 5257 to set up an appointment.
